How to Make a Stew

It's not pretty food. It's bare bones, no fuss, down home comfort food like mom and grandma used to make. Get a slab of meat. Chuck roast in this case, but only because you don't have any kosher brisket on hand. Stick it in a pot. Buy fresh vegetables. Red potatoes. String beans. Yellow onion. Baby carrots. Stick those in too. Then add a frightening amount of ketchup, some salt, bay leaves and lots of water. Pour in a can of diet coke for good measure. Why not? Turn your oven to 350 degrees and let it bake.

Do things while you wait. It's raining out. Take your son to the bookstore and take turns looking at the books while he plays with the trains. Watch some other mom ignore her kid as the kid pours coffee out of the trashcan onto the floor. Congratulate yourself. Grab a cup of hot coffee with lots of splenda. Go home and read books. Talk on the phone to your friends. This is what Sunday is all about.

When the stew is done, don't put it on a fancy plate. Use old bowls. You don't even have to eat at the table. The couch will do with a dumb sitcom on the TV. Snuggle under a blanket while you eat. Tear off a hunk of bread to dip in the hearty sauce. Listen to the rain outside the window. This is the life.

Try this at home:
What recipe makes you think of your mother?
