How to be Affected

Sometimes you go about your life fretting and worrying over annoying, petty problems and concerns. The underhead cabinet lights aren't working and the electrician won't stand by his work. Your back tire needs replacing. The dog barks whenever you let her outside. It's easy to let these things bother you, as if they actually matter. Even if you know they don't. Even if you've had first hand experience about the things that actually matter and the things that don't.

Then read a news story about someone who matters. Someone in pain. Someone whose family is in pain. Someone who didn't deserve the bad thing that happened to her. (As if most people deserve the bad things that happen to them, right?) Let that person remind you of what matters. Let the little problems fall away and remember what it feels like to really hurt and let that remembering help you be kind, grateful and caring.

People matter.

Try this at home:
How can you be a kinder person?
