Sort change while you watch America's Next Top Model and have schadenfreude over the girls' ugly haircuts. Ah, guilty pleasures. Hear the phone ring and see the familiar area code. Pick up.
Pick up where you left off. Yesterday. Three days ago. One month. Sixteen years. From discussing boys you both liked to big things, serious pain and joy and dreams. Marriage. Children. School. Jobs. You've said it all. There's nothing left to say and yet you manage, somehow, to find each other charming and maddening at the same time and always, always there is laughter.
Who else could you gossip with who wouldn't judge? Who wouldn't tell your secrets? Who wouldn't say "you shouldn't" and "how could you" but instead understands almost as if you share the same twisted brain? Who else do you have so much history with? Never needing to explain. Always remembering that time in that place with those people. Groups of friends come and gone but still the two of you never to be parted.
Who else can you hate and love sometimes at the same time but always know that you won't give up on each other because who would you be without him? Who else would bring out those parts of yourself you hate and love so much.
It's easy to talk to your best friend. Do it a lot.
Try this at home:
What does your best friend give to you?
