How to Love Snark

Before the internets, you'd never even heard of the word "snark." Is it like a Snork, you might have asked, those adorable little cartoon sea creatures who were cousins to the Smurfs?

But the answer is NO. Snark has nothing to do with Snorks, except that Snorks might be fun to snark on.

No. Snark is one fun thing you can do to waste time on the internet. It's the talent of wittily bashing something or someone you find stupid or annoying or ridiculous. It is especially fun to snark over bad television or obnoxious mommy message boards. Whole web sites are devoted to snark!

A good snarker has a tough skin, which you do not. If you're snarky, you have to expect that someone else is going to be snarky right back. When you read ridiculous or obnoxious things on the internet you tend to find yourself not snarking, but merely ranting in an unflattering, insecure kind of way and wanting to erase your messages ten seconds later. So you try to keep the attempted snarking to a minimum and instead enjoy reading other people's snark. Let them take the risk of pissing people off while you sit back and enjoy the show.

Try this at home:
What makes you snarky?
