Last night you watched a movie that you hated. You didn't go see it when it came out in the theater because it was about pregnancy and childbirth and everyone loved it, which almost always means that you'll hate it. You planned on not watching it at all, but the rain got the best of you and you visited the video store and Roger Ebert said it was the best film of the year and god knows you love you some Roger Ebert.
So you caved.
And you watched.
And you hated.
As expected.
And felt once again like you were completely out of the loop of the rest of womankind and some kind of depressing mopey girl who always thinks about pain and loss where others see hope and beauty.
BUT! In the movie that you hated. And you hated it. You really really hated it. Jason Bateman's character plays the Sonic Youth cover of Superstar by The Carpenters. And you were so surprised! That song is from "If I Were a Carpenter" which is a CD of cover songs of (who else) The Carpenters. You picked it up one day when you had to be 18 or so probably at the Tower Records in The Village where you were smoking a cigarette and wearing platform shoes and something from French Connection and pining over some boy who didn't really deserve your pining and you thought it was terribly ironic and funny and then you listened to the album and totally fell in love with it and the Superstar cover is actually your very favorite song on that album. And then in your Junior year of college your car got broken into and someone stole a lot of your CDs and you worried that maybe he'd stolen that CD too because this was before Napster and you didn't know if you'd be able to find it again. But he hadn't! (Even though he did get your Sinead CDs, the bastard.) The Carpenters CD was still there!
And here you are last night watching this movie that you hate. You really hate it. Really. Really. Hate. And there's this little gem right in the middle of it that reminds you of your own youth, which is kind of apropos because the character is actually trying to reclaim his own youth (and failing miserably). And you listened to the song again and discovered that you like it just as much at 32 as you did at 18. Even though you don't smoke anymore or generally wear platform shoes, you are still pining over just about everything.
Try this at home:
What song reminds you of being 18?

I didn't like Juno either. It was so fucking precious. That's why we're best friends.
You're the one and only dominator! Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep!
I did think Jason Bateman was really hot, though. I was like...run off with Jason Bateman! Now that would have been a plot twist I didn't expect.
