Every couple of months you look at the black hole that your garage has become and wonder, "How did THAT happen?" It just seems to collect your life. Handmedown furniture from your grandmother that you never really wanted anyway and your parents fend off like garlic to a vampire. Used baby items that live in purgatory because you can't figure out if you want to give it another go or pack up the old uterus forevermore. Four crates of bottled water that you bought during some terrible Katrina related fear that had something to do with being trapped in the cannibalistic suburbs with a baby and also involved buying mass quantities of cheap dog and cat food that you tried to feed to your manimals when supplies got low and they were so spoiled they refused to eat it anyway. There it all sits, your pathetic "human footprint" staring you right in the gluttonous face.
It then takes you another couple of months wading through the muck to decide to actually do something about it. You'd rather step over high chairs and trip over deflated balls than actually commit to getting rid of any of it.
But finally, in a fit of sheer determination brought on strangely enough by your husband's desire to cut down the holly trees in your front yard, you stack and organize, purge and perspire until you are left with a big, clean room that's almost large enough to actually park a car in if you didn't have so much gosh darn STUFF that needs a place to sit. (You don't actually cut down the holly trees, but it doesn't seem to matter so much anymore.)
You found yourself opening up the garage door several times yesterday just to look at your handiwork. You peeked your head in and smiled. How clean! How uncluttered! You could go out there and do a little dance. Cha Cha, anyone? There's something about a clean garage that's like the icing on the cake. If the garage is clean and organized, your life must truly be in order.
