How to Like a Trike

Sit in a rocking chair in your driveway reading a Newsweek article about the Mommy Wars because we all haven't heard enough about that subject. Listen to your dog bark at the dog down the street endlessly. Yell at her to shut up until you notice the neighbor you don't like because he wouldn't let you put up a dog fence pull into his driveway. Smile. Say, "Good dog."

Sigh. Sigh again. The sun has turned hot on you. Worry that your kid is going to get sunburned. You have spawned Casper.

Your child is doing laps around your minivan on his trike, which he has only recently learned to peddle. Your next door neighbor's son knew how this summer and you kept encouraging your child to learn how but he refused, just dragging his feet on the ground and pushing the contraption around to do his bidding. Then one day you came to pick him up at preschool and discovered him peddling, pulling another kid along in the little kiddie rickshaws they have on the playground. And just like that he did it without your urging at all.

Now it's like he always knew how even though just days ago he was unsure how to turn the handlebars. He mastered it quickly enough and now he peddles past you again and again, looking over his shoulder each time to smile at you and ding the bell as he goes by.

"Go, Gideon, Go!" You say. And he laughs and peddles faster.

Try this at home:
When was the last time you went for a bike ride?
