How to (Not) Nap

There was a time when you loved to nap. Back in high school when you never went to sleep on time, you'd stay up way too late and crash when you got home from school, waking up again when it was dark. In college, you have fond memories of falling asleep on top of your blanket with the sun streaming through your dorm window. And what about the weekend nap? After a big brunch, plopping down in the front of the boob tube and zonking out for an hour? Bliss!

All that changed when you had your son. Why? That's easy. You didn't want to give up conscious alone time. When he was tiny people would say, "Sleep when the baby sleeps." But the time when the baby sleeps is the time you get to DO stuff. Grown up stuff. Boring necessary stuff like laundry and dishes. Fun stuff like painting your nails. Who had time for sleep?

And now? You do have time for a nap, but it's lost some of its luster. Today you napped after a night of a trembling, yapping dog, child who woke up in the middle of the night, and a day of disasterous fishing trip with your father and lunch at Nordstroms' Cafe with a friend (a rather odd combination when you think of it). You needed a nap!!!!!!! And oh it was sweet to lay down on the bed with a book, toss the covers over your back and slowly drift off. You felt all warm and snuggly. Delicious.

Until two hours later when you woke up with a headache and your kid yelling from the other room. You felt like a large dumptruck had slowly smothered you in your sleep.

Good naps. You miss them almost as much as your bellybutton.

Try this at home:
When was your last nap?
