Be 24 years old and wander around Park Slope until you find a cool little jewelry store that sells all kinds of unique wedding bands and engagement rings. Have a little fantasy that you'll be some kind of fairy princess on your wedding day. Have fallen in love with this huge silver wedding dress with actual sparkles on it that ends up making you look like a cross between a drag queen and a linebacker. You are not as pretty as Julia Roberts, so this kind of eccentricity is not as charming on you as on Shelby "My colors are pink and pink" from Steel Magnolias.
Oh, but there's this ring! It looks like an antique, which you love about it. (But you will end up hating it when people think it's an heirloom. You really want everyone to know your man laid out big bucks for it.) It has lots of little pave diamonds that you're always checking to make sure that none fall out and one big ole diamond in the center with four prongs that look like little tiny hands holding it in place. It's the kind of ring you imagine Zelda Fitzgerald might have. You would like to be like Zelda Fitzgerald, only you can do without the insanity thank you very much. (You will never be like Zelda Fitzgerald any more than you will be like the WASPS in Steel Magnolias. Why are you always wanting to be someone else?)
Now your ring sits on you desk a lot. For a while it wouldn't even fit your finger. (Thank two pregnancies and massive weight gain and swelling for that little gift!) You got used to just looking at it. Now it fits again and slipping it on you feel just a little bit like Cinderella with her beautiful glass slipper.
Try this at home:
What is your favorite piece of jewelry?
