Ready. Set. Go.
Take one step. One foot out. Then another. Then another. Keep a pace. Don't slow down. Feel the burn, but don't let it burn you out.
There is a joy in this. Punishing your body makes you feel.
Keep a plodding pace even if you want to stop. Don't look at the clock. Look at the other bodies in the gym. Look at their toned backs and butts and legs running running running in front of you and beside you and behind you. Some are not so toned, but they run anyway. The man in his sixties in the red track shorts. Always here day after day. Sun. Snow. Rain. Wind. Snot. The pregnant woman in her leotard heavy in the belly and nowhere else looking poised to topple like a weeble wobble and yet she stands. She runs!
Why? For results? Or for the fun of it? Just to move. Just to feel. Just to know you are alive and that your body works.
It works!
Keep to the middle of the pack or you might get eaten. You're no fast, long gazelle or quick hare. You are just a slow little turtle trying to make it to the finish. Enjoy the trip. Why rush it? You will get there if you just keep going. Keep going!
Go a little faster now and it gets easier. You're finding your rhythm, shaking your groove thang. Feel your legs lift up high. How easy it is to pump them up and down like they were pistons designed to do it. You are a machine running like it ought to. How could you deny your body this movement? It wasn't meant to sit in a chair all day all soft and cush. It begs for more! Give it what it's asking and it will reward you.
And slowly you ease into it. The high gymtime nirvana settles over you like a soft cloud that you sink into as all the while your breath hangs in your throat and ears like the sounds of the train engines your son so loves. Bliss. This is bliss. Hear the beats of the music pumping in time to your heart. Lick the sweat from your upper lip. Absentmindedly, taste the salt of your body. Run. Run. Run. Run.
Don't.
Ever.
Stop.
Try this at home:
Describe something that hurts in a good way.
