Get her when she's still a puppy. Or don't. Older dogs are wonderful too. But if you get her when she's still a puppy, take her home in your lap. She'll shake a little on the ride home. Feel sad that you're taking her away from her mommy, but grateful that she's yours. You need her.
Give her a name you would give a child if people wouldn't laugh at you. Buy her lots of expensive dog toys. A checkered pink leash and collar. Funny little stuffed lambs and bears that squeak when she bites them. Carry her up and down the stairs because she's too little. Put her in a purse and go grocery shopping with her. She will lay there silent, sneaking her nose out for treats. Take too many pictures of her exposing her soft underbelly and wagging her stumpy tail. Treat her like a surrogate child because she is one.
When your son comes promise that you won't stop loving her and mean it. You owe her more than a dog could ever know. Feed her too much, even when you don't mean to, and watch her get fat. Listen to her snore at your feet as you type this. She scurries after you on short legs you when you go to the bathroom or grab a drink from the kitchen. Watch her get older and know that someday she will mean definite heartbreak.

Love her the most because you know she loves you best of all. You are hers. There are so few creatures who will feel this way about you in your lifetime.
Try this at home:
Who gives you unconditional love?
